Our favorite bird, the Heron 👀❤️

The Black-Crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax Nycticorax) is the Town's official bird! And it happens to be our favorite bird too. It's a treat when we get to see the Night Heron bebopping around the lake at night. Not afraid of much, it'll come right up to you out of sheer curiosity. A stunning bird, it dances alongside the drummers who stay late to drum at the lake.

Captured in flight, one foot is clutching the key to Oakland, which opens the doors to our Town, and the other is a pair of Afro-Cuban clave sticks. "Clave" means key in Español, and this musical instrument is literally the key to not only Afro-Cuban music, but to all of today's modern music, as the clave rhythm (or key pattern) comes directly from Sub-Saharan Africa. It's the foundational basis of all of the popular music we listen to today. Without the clave, there wouldn't be much of the music we so dearly love. It's literally the DNA of modern popular music, and that DNA is unquestionably African. It's also no coincidence that Oakland has one of the richest musical histories in the nation. So as an homage, we tip our hats in our own special way to Africa, to the Town, and to our favorite resident lakeside bird!
